Mairena del Alcor has been under the patronage of Saint Bartholomew since 1247, coinciding with the conquest of the town by Fernando III ‘El Santo’ on the feast day of the apostle. He has been the Perpetual Mayor since 1997, the year in which he was also awarded the Gold Medal of Mairena del Alcor for the 750th anniversary of the patronage. Sebastián Santos Rojas is the creator of the image, carved in cedarwood from September 1944 to February 1946, commissioned by the Town Hall as a gift to its people.
This week, Mairena del Alcor will celebrate the devotions and procession of the Patron and Perpetual Mayor Saint Bartholomew. The triduum will take place on August 21, 22, and 23, beginning with the praying of the holy rosary at 19:30 and the Eucharist at 20:00 in the parish church of Santa María de la Asunción.
The solemn function will be officiated on the 24th at 20:00 hours. Afterwards, the procession will start. As a novelty, this year the procession will conclude at the San Sebastián hermitage to mark the 50th anniversary of the canonical coronation of the patroness Ntra. Sra. de los Remedios Coronada.
The Sacramental Archconfraternity invites all the residents who live along the procession route to decorate their balconies for the day of August 24th. Each year more faithful join these preparations, which are on their way to being restored as a popular tradition.
